SeaWorld Case Study

This case study was conducted in Dr. Matt Ragas' Corporate Communications class in Fall 2014.

In January 2013, SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment was faced with a crisis that threatened its reputation after the release of the independent documentary, “Blackfish." The documentary highlights the capture and captivity of Orca whales for entertainment purposes. “Blackfish” also places emphasis on the tragic accident at SeaWorld Orlando involving Tilikum, an Orca whale, and the role he played in the death of trainer Dawn Brancheau. After the airing of “Blackfish” on CNN in October 2013, the public was outraged and SeaWorld experienced a significant drop in attendance and revenue. The accompanying case study provides thorough insight into SeaWorld's "Blackfish” crisis before, during and after the airing of the documentary and SeaWorld’s response efforts.
